An excellent photograph from my Son and Daughter-in-Law - taken during a recent day-out. Box Hill is famous for many reasons - including Napoleonic Forts and WWII Emplacements - but it is also a vast open (but hilly) space of natural wonder and splendour (click picture for more details! Nature - even pictures of it - can produce a rejuvenating effect upon all those who witness it! Yes - some of us can physically visit such places (go if you are able) - but many more cannot for various reasons. I like this picture because gate-ways are doorways into other places. We possess such gate-ways in our hearts and minds - whilst the physical world has more substantial gates in the so-called real world. I like to think that genuine (spiritual) truth is universal and eternal. "For so work the honey-bees, Creatures that by a rule in nature teach The act of order to a peopled kingdom. They have a king and officers of sorts; Where some, like magistrates, correct at home , Others, like soldiers, armed in their stings, Make boot upon the summer's velvet buds; Which pillage they with merry march bring home To the tent-royal of their emperor." The Bard - William Shakespeare (1564-1616) - Henry V (I.ii) If we can, we must transform our mind and body limitations into vehicles of further progression. This may not be easy - but it is an essential task. What this takes is the opening of (unseen) inner doorways that only we can see. Nevertheless, this gnostic process unlocks the heart (spreading love and care) and broadens the mind (so that wisdom reigns). Quite often "humility" is often the key to the unfolding of this process. Compassion that permeates the inner and outer world we inhabit - what other pathway is there?

25/12/2023 0 Comments Xmas - 2023 - Veteran's Medal! My father - Alfred Gregory Wyles (1916-1976) - was a Professional soldier during WWII! He joined the Oxford & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (Territorials) and served as part of an anti-tank platoon. Landing in the first-waves on Sword Beach during the D-Day Normandy Landings - he was tasked with fighting ten-miles in-land to relieve the Ox & Bucks Glider Troops (D Company of the 2nd Battalion 'Professionals')which had landed in their wooden gliders (earlier) in Caen. All elements of the Ox & Bucks trained around the Exeter Canal System in preparation for this mission as the area resembled the very similar Caen Canal System. His Unit ran into a SS Regiment which was being 'rested' France after spending a year or so committing war crimes in the USSR! As a consequence, nearly everyone in his Unit was killed and/or wounded - with the SS murdering those they captured. My father became a 'Straggler' and carried-on fighting in the hedge-rows of France - surviving as best he could. Eventually, he encountered the kilt-wearing soldiers of the Gordon Highlanders and was taken into that regiment. He fought his way to Hamburg - where he was finally granted 'Leave' to return to the UK during January, 1945. By that time he had been on frontline active service for 7 straight months! As he had been subjected to such high-risk stress - the British Army Authorities decided that he needed prolonged rest - which eventually led to him being de-mobilised as Victory against Nazi Germany was assured. My son - Adrian - applied for a 'Veteran's Medal' for my father - and the request was granted! On e of the pictures below features my father holding my son (Adrian) during the 'Summer of Love' which happened during 1967!
24/6/2023 0 Comments Paignton: Yannis Nicolaou - Immortalised in Stone - Or At Least Spray Paint! (24.6.2023)Yannis Nicolaou - and the young people of Torbay - have produced yet another work of art! If you want to see it - just drive on the road between Torquay and Paignton and look (carefully) toward what used to be the Gas-Works (opposite 'Hollicombe Park')! Even when I am not there (and after I am gone) my spirit can keep waving at the traffic as it passes by! What an excellent collective effort! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
My Dad - Alfred Wyles - fought in the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry (Territorials) and was involved in the Normandy D-Day Landings around Sword Beach and the Caen area of Northwest France! The Ox & Bucks landed on Sword Beach and had to fight their way in-land to 'relieve' the Ox & Bucks Unit (Professional) that had landed earlier as 'Glider Troops' (British Airborne) around the Canal System at Caen. It seems that the 'Territorial' and 'Professional' Ox & Bucks trained together in preparation around the similar-looking Exeter Canal System! As the 'Light Bobs' (as the 1st Buckinghamshire Battalion was known) had to join-up with their counter-parts in that formed the Glider Troops - it is only logical that they got to know the area and conditions of operation. Of course, there are conflicting stories which are probably the products of incomplete or muddled thinking. As my father bequeathed a 'Winged Pegasus' badge apparently from his Uniform - some say he took part in the Glider Landings (his wife - my Mum - Gladys Kilmurray always maintained that he was a 'Commando' who received 'Hazardous Duties' payments! The strange thing is that the NOD - when providing his War Record - would not give any details of his exact deployment and would not confirm or deny any of our family stories. Still, younger members of our family did find out (through a historian in an Oxford Military Museum) - that out exactly what his British Army Unit was and that it had landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day 1944! Further credibility to the family stories was given by the uncovering of the connection with Caen! Whatever the case, my father's Unit suffered heavy casualties on D-Day (he lost all his friends) and thereafter - making him fight for his life in the French countryside as a 'Straggler' - who was eventually taken in by the Gordon Highlanders! He fought his way to Hamburg over the next year or so - before he was eventually granted 'Leave' from the stresses of continuous 'Frontline' duty! He returned to the UK in late 1945 and remained a soldier in the British Army until mid-1946 when he was Demobilised. I believe he ended his formal military career in the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry. I am told that 'Light Infantry' Units are flanking formations comprised of 'Sharp-Shooters'! In other words, my father would have been a very good shot!
5/6/2023 0 Comments A Wise Old Owl...Another member of the family has just had a day of birthness - and out of it all came a beautiful card (Owl) and two Buddhas - one gold and the other red! When the card and Buddhas are arranged in a specific orientation - a superb effect if produced! The CD cover is 'Pure McCartney'! I suppose it all goes together in one way or another!
28/5/2023 1 Comment Well, Today is My 80th Birthday!I was born on May 28th 1943 - as the UK was involved in WWII and the bombs were dropping! Today, I am visiting my family and quietly eating my dinner (lunch is for posh people).'My body is in accord with my mind, my mind with my energies, my energies with my spirit, my spirit with Nothing. Whenever the minutest existing thing or the faintest sound affects me, whether it is far away beyond the eight borderlands, or close at hand between my eyebrows and eyelashes, I am bound to know it. However, I do not know whether I perceived it with the seven holes in my head and my four limbs, or knew it through my heart and belly and internal organs. It is simply self-knowledge.' This is what the Daoists say at any rate. The secret of longevity is the continuation of the breathing mechanism. I am not sure it involves anything more than this. Words might become 'fewer' with age - but this because they are supposed to get 'wiser'! Let's leave it at that!
19/2/2023 0 Comments Christmas Eve - 1997!My son - Adrian - had gone to London to make his fortune (like Dick Whittington)! There, whilst working in Sutton (Southwest London) he met and married Cindy Chan (now his 'ex' wife). They were married in Sri Lanka during December, 1996! Cindy's family was from Hong Kong when it was a British Colony. The Chan family had arrived in 1956 - and set-up a very successful Take-Away and Restaurant in Sutton! During WWII - the Chan family - like thousands of other Chinese people - joined the British in their fight against the Imperial Japanese! Allies to the end against fascist tyranny! Still, we must evolve beyond all forms of 'war' - and peace and love must replace 'force' and 'barbarism'! This message is for ALL people and not just one group in favour of another! Still, to the left is Charlotte (my younger daughter) - and in my arms is my first grand-daughter - little 'Sue-Ling' (she was born during 'August' 1997)! She is all grown-up now - and my son has re-married - but this was a great and wondrous time! This picture was taken in Tiverton, Devon! Cherish and value what you have - you never know what is around the corner! All you need is love!
27/10/2022 0 Comments Always Do the Right Thing...Captain Edward Smith of the RMS Titanic - had a beard like me! A very brave man who went down with his ship - like many others that cold April night in 1912! We must be a support to one another - and through our actions - inspire others to be brave! Who knows - we might not be able to change our immediate circumstances - but perhaps we can transform the world for the better for those who come after us! Fear is natural in difficult times - but love for one another can always be stronger! Sometimes, we must stand where we are because fate demands it and there is no other opportunity! In this way - although our bodies are entrapped by the conditions our bodies find themselves within - our minds and spirits soar through the cosmos completely free and unhindered! Oneday, this transition from matter to spirit comes to us all - in one way or another! It is wise to be prepared! Captain Smith above is played by British Actor Bernard Hill - who I remember playing the part of 'Yosser Hughes' in the 'Boys From the Black Stuff' - on British TV during the 1980s!
Love - Moses Kai-Lin (left) and Mei-An (right) - my two beautiful grand-daughters from South London! Life is short and we must treat one another with love and respect. What else is there? Children carry-on our genetics and retain the memories of who we are - their ancestors! Our children and grand-children must build a better and more loving world! Wisdom and compassion are the keys that will build a better world! Many people are psychologically and physically damaged by various events that they have experienced in their lives! This observation is stronger than any government, any Court or any army! Anyone can do anything to our bodies - but we possess the ability to strengthen our minds and expand our hearts! Who can beat this? No one! A person can have any amount of worldly power - but it means absolutely NOTHING without a heart that emits a boundless and all enveloping love for all beings! All beings - that is every form of life past, present or future - are all equally valid! I love all of you without exception. You do not have to like me, support me, care about me or even think I am useful in anyway - I need NOTHING from you! I LOVE you without exception no matter who you are or what you have done (or not done). I do not care about your history because LOVE permeates everywhere and all the time. When I look and wave at you - you are immediately free! More than this - when we meet the value of your being FREES me!
23/6/2022 0 Comments Treading Carefully...As per usual, the seasons are slowly turning! I often sit at my window looking-out upon the garden and observe all the changes as they occur... This involves the presence of a number of rabbits as they move around - pretending to hide from this or that predator. These rabbits are pets and are very well looked after and the only issue they have is the odd sea gall or perhaps enquiring cat! In other words, these rabbits have no real concerns, other than when it is feeding time! Much like myself - particularly as I am older than I was - but am in better health than I should expect! Waving on occasion - sitting and contemplating reality - and inbetween moving around and visiting family and friends! The art, particularly as I move into old age is to pick out words carefully and use them sparingly so that the maximum good is achieved through the minimum effort! This is not as easy as it sounds - as everyone interprets 'words' differently and what is viewed as 'praise' here is equally viewed as 'criticism' there! This is why 'silence' is often used as a position of 'no position' - and although it is a bit cryptic - nevertheless does not pour fuel on the fire of agitation, or at least does not make matters worse! On the other hand, a well chosen and precisely placed word can move mountains and produce much positive effect! On the mundane level, as the seasons have moved on yet again, family and friends have traversed through my awareness - and birthdays, bank holidays and significant times of the year have come and gone! I trust you are all well, and if not, I hope that healing and help will come your way in an unlimited quantity!
